Sheryl Oring

I wish I could have met this lady and had her write one of the I Wish to Say Letters. I think this is an incredible idea and an outstanding way to get people to send letters to the president. One of the letters that caught my attention was a letter from a 9 year old girl. I really like seeing the innocence in the letter of how the little girl just says "you are the best". I wish everyone could see things through the eyes of a little kid and still have the innocence we dream of. I think her idea of writing letters captures the true feelings of people and shares it with the president.

Massive Attack

A group that changed the world of music. In 1991 they released the first album "Blue Lines". I really like there rhythmic beats and trance like music. I feel this band set some new boundaries for the style of music. After listening to almost the whole album "Blue Lines" I feel in love with them. I really like there music.
After following up on some of there lyrics I found it very interesting that the group had some big political pushes. I really liked finding that they stood up for what they believed in and that they we not afraid to speak out about it such as the war in Iraq. I am going to keep listening to there music and reading more about them.

3 Video art examples from videoartes.com

HOLY CRAP! The things some people create is amazing! I really liked going through this website and I am saving it for future digging. It was hard for me to pick my 3 favorites since I spent about 4 hours on the site going through the videos. But for some unknown reason I was drawn to the stop motions ones.

I really liked this one video because ever since I was little I have been skateboarding.

The next video I chose was one with legos and music because it is a visual representation on everything we have been learning.

Lastly I really like the time lapse effects in this video.

Performance Art Critique

Gina - No video to see

Andrea - I really like the idea! I love how it works with your major and how you asked people to paint slogans that they remembered. Although it may not have gone to plan and they painted random things I really liked the idea behind it. I wish you were standing up when being painted.

Bryan - THE COMPUTERS! Amazing idea. I just wish you made people look at you and put yourself in the way to force them to look.

Kirby - I really liked everything you did. You made people stop driving to pay attention to you! Perfect! The only thing I would change would be so you could see peoples reactions.

Holly - No video to see (it said private). I really like the idea after reading your description. Just wish I could see it.

Marveen - You could of done much better. Holding the camera directly over them took away from the whole project. We also could not see any reactions.

Katelyn - I LOVE IT! Great idea with the sign and how you went onto a main street and distracted people. I wish you could do a bigger sign and kind of play around with it.

Leah - Great project! The paint really shows peoples emotions and I think you did a great job. I wish you brought the board to class to see.

Ralph - Great idea and concept! I loved seeing people interact with the piece and become one with your art. It made the idea come to life in many ways and helped you.

Kyle - AMAZING!!!!!!!!

5 artists

BLOG: Considering the grouping I used for this module, choose 5 different music "movements" from the ones listed above and add one group/musician/performer to that category. Why did you choose this artist? Why do you consider their work fits with technology and electronic music in their context? Post their works and your comments on your blogs.

1. Gummy - WarHorse
I would add this song to the new electronic/producer dj culture. He creates all his music by hand in logic and it reminds me of the 808 in how the beats are consistant and change through modulation. This artist is part of the new age rave scene that is starting to associate with molly and new age drugs.

2. Opiou - In Search of King Anchovy
I would add this song to experimental category. It sounds as if they are sampling a ton of different beats and noises and mixing them together to create this mix. This song I think would associate with the house scene and the more hard core drugs such as heron.

3. Avicii vs Krewella
These two artists are constantly mixing songs and remaking songs to sound even better. They are the new age post modern crises. I would assume these songs are associated again with molly or the new age drugs. The technology in creating this song is part of our new digital revolution and is made completely on the computer.

4. Anna Sun - Walk the Moon
I would add this song to the punk movement. Although it maybe doesn't fit perfectly it is when they stated to mess with voice alterations and instrument alterations. This band uses a lot of distortions in there music. I would associate this genre of music with the medical marijuana movement. For punk the music was an outlet for that generation and this indie revolution is the outlet for my generation.

5. Beyonce - Run this world
Aside from the beats being sampled and sounding like and electronic version of the tr-808 and all the distortions and modulations. This song would be added to the girl power category. This is a new age song about how girls run the world and are taking over. It is a song that stands up for them and makes them powerful.

Performance Art

For my performance art piece I chose to mock the communication department and how we are supposed to be the ones at communicated but yet it still feels like we are in ancient times communicating.

The link wont load but here it is.

Northern Soul and the Smiths

WOW! I find this extremely fascinating. I feel like every generation we have with music an underground movement comes with it but for this I think it was more of a lifestyle than a movement. I feel like it is almost comparable to the indie-rock and marijuana movement we are seeing today. I think its really cool to see how someones lack of success in the states can transfer to there extreme success over seas. I wish I could step back in time and visit some of these dance clubs and go to the concerts. I feel music back than was an escape from the times and with the digital age it has lost that touch. I began to research some more Northern Soul artist to see if I recognized any of them. Of course I did not reconize any of them but I found this list of the top 100 and I clicked through and played some of the songs. Click here

808 Drum, 808 Kick, 808 Woopwubwubwub

The mix board that started it all the TR-808. From revolutionary to groundbreaking to amazing to everything else you can think! This device was the coolest thing under the sun in the 1980's. Every artists, every dj, every music composer had to have one of these crazy devices. All it did was create drum beats along with other instruments. This machine paved the way for all modern music we have today and is still being quotes in some of the worlds most famous songs today.

I found these three songs that still today, even though not made on an 808 quote the device in there lyrics.

Graphene, the Material of Tomorrow

http://www.cnn.com/2013/10/02/tech/innovation/
graphene-quest-for-first-ever-2d-material/
Holy CRAP! To think everything we have ever developed in the past is about to be changed! Every advancement we have ever had is about to be blown away! Graphene is the wave of the future and I definitely think if this article is accurate we will see it being used commercial in the next couple years.
Computers might double in power and video games might shrink down to nothing. Graphene can do everything we want it to do and then ten times more. Oculas rift might actually become a fast reality. This little tiny sheet of carbon atoms are going to forever change everything technology and push us right into the future we dream about. If I could choose one item for them to start production on a mass scale of this item, it would be fios cables. I think that they could use this to speed up the worlds internet and change the way we all communicate. I cant wait to see what comes from this discovery.

Xerox Project Critique

Gina -  I really like the idea of how you made it to be wearable!!!! That is amazing! I also really loved how you used daily items that most people might over look such as q-tips. That was really creative and unique.

Andrea - I love the meaning of the dadaism behind the shirt and how the three hands represent people all trying to grab the lips to have there say! It is an amazing concept, I just with the shirt was bigger and involved more aspects to it.

Brian - It was a unique idea but the execution could of been much better. I wish you shaped the prints to the toilette so we could see the shape.

Kirby - I find this one much more unique than the others because it has a sub conceisous history to it. I really like how we talked about it maybe being another life you had.

Holly - The dark vs the good! It was amazing! It is so cool to see how you battled out the dark and good of college and chose the good to make your life much better.

Marveen - I really like the history connection to your life but I feel it was way to small and could of used much more effort.

Kaitlyn - I LOVE THE DOG! I think that took the project to the next level and really showed how in depth your concept was. I feel that it was extremely well executed and very well done.

Lea - Now part of your life the travel to Massachusetts to college, this concept is an amazing idea. I really like how you incorporated your tattoos in the images and made the image much more personable.

Ralph - AMAZING! There is not much more to say besides extremely well done and the fact you hung them in the tree it put the project over the top.

Kyle - I really like the hat the top part of it. I just wish you had more to it such as a sword and shield.

Advertising vs Propaganda

What is the difference between propaganda and advertising?

I had to start with the definitions of both because I am unsure of what they really are or what they really mean. Propaganda is the deliberate spreading of harmful information and or rumors. A direct example of this would be the material used during world war 2, and how the germans idolized Hitler and knocked the jews. Next advertising is the act of calling attention to ones product. Another example of this would be commercials that we see everyday, such as people selling items or their services.

Now that I know there is a huge difference between the two of them. I feel advertising is more to market items and to sell them.  Where propaganda is more to negatively promote someone. Although I feel their is some grey area in between the two of them. There are some places where things cross over, and they mix. I feel both take incredible amounts of skill to pull off correctly. Although they are for different causes they both have to accomplish the challenge of appealing to people. This is a very difficult task but when done right it is very successful. This is why I think there are some similarities between advertising and propaganda and why they can not be mixed.
