Singing in the RAIN!

Such a happy song yet it is being sung while the wife gets her clothes cut off and raped. This is a very tense scene that depicts an act deemed by society as a horrific action. I tried to picture this scene without the song to try and get a feeling for what maybe the directors where thinking before they decided to put it in the film. As I played the clip back with no audio the scene took on another perspective. I felt it had more meaning as if the raping was more thought through rather than a spontaneous action. When I played it back with music, it had almost a light hearted feeling. I can not really describe it but I feel the music and dancing brings a creepy almost innocent aspect to such a harmful activity. I also really like how at first the song is not sexual bust as it progress the song talks about making love. When I began to research why the song was put in, I came across some trivia facts from the movie. When the directors were playing with this scene it took them four days to perfect it. Finally the director asked Malcolm McDowell to dance and sing while doing the scene. As the scene started rolling and he started singing, he did the only song he knew by heart. That song happened to be "Singing in the Rain". The director then immediate bought the rights to the song for $10,000 because he loved how much it fit into the film. I really like that the song was put into the movie and I think that it adds more character to the singer. I could not picture this being performed any other way.
